David Payne's Sea Kayaks

These sea kayaks have been designed by well known Sydney designer David Payne, originally for building on a jig. BoatCraft have developed the designs by converting them to a CAD program which enables all the panels to be laser or router cut to very high accuracy for stitch and glue construction. Boats can be personalised by adding hatch openings, rudders or skegs as required, for either long distance touring or shorter recreational paddling.

Laser cut panels are supplied as part of a complete hull construction kit, which includes pre-cut premium light weight Gaboon marine plywood, timber for sheer stringers, Bote-Cote epoxy, fibreglass tape and cloth. Both one and two person models are available

Detailed building instructions and plans are provided. All the owner has to do is remove the parts from the plywood sheets and start coating and assembling. Some glueing, laminating, and sanding later, the boat is ready for painting. No special tools, boatbuilding, or woodworking skills are needed!

BOATCRAFT PACIFIC CRUISING CATAMARANS

BoatCraft 9.5m Performance Cruising Catamaran

BoatCraft's 9.5 m catamaran has been designed to offer exhilarating racing performance combined with comfortable accomodation for 5 - 6 people for cruising weekends and holidays. It has all the features of much larger boats, cleverly designed into a compact economical craft. It will have particular appeal to both private owners, and to hire fleet operators seeking a small economical easily handled boat.

The vessel, from multihull designer Ashley Holliday, is based on the highly efficient Thruster hull form. These narrow, low resistance hulls are very easily driven, and with their long waterline they provide exceptional stability and performance. There is standing headroom of 1900 mm in the hulls and on the bridgedeck.

Accommodation is for up to six in two double and two single berths (one utilises the saloon settee). In keeping with modern considerations, a generous cockpit awning provides shelter from sun and weather. Plans provide detailed layouts and instructions, and include full sized cross sections for hull profiles. The profiles, being permanent bulkheads, are available as fully CNC router-cut panels.

  • Overall length: 9.46 m
  • Waterline length: 9.28 m
  • Maximum beam: 4.23 m
  • Waterline beam: 4.07 m
  • Draught: 0.347 m
  • Displacement: 2530 kg
  • Midsection freeboard: 0.888 m
  • Mass per unit immersion: 9983 kg/m
  • Prismatic coefficient: 0.619

BoatCraft 12 m Performance Cruising Catamaran

BoatCraft's 12 m catamaran has been designed to offer outstanding cruising performance with comfortable accomodation for up to 8 people for cruising weekends and holidays. It has all the features of a luxury catamaran, cleverly designed into a compact economical craft. It will have particular appeal to both private owners, and to hire fleet operators seeking an economic, spacious, easily handled boat.

The vessel, from multihull designer Ashley Holliday, has relatively narrow, low resistance hulls which are very easily driven, and with their long waterline they provide exceptional stability and performance. The hull weight should be around 2500 kg, and has an enormous load capacity with a design displacement to 4700 kg. Cruising speeds of 10 - 12 knots can be anticipated.

A design feature is the rounded bilges combined with smoothly curved hull sides which eliminate the apparent slab sided effect often associated with plywood construction. The boat is built using 13 mm Quickstrip Western Red Cedar planking below the waterline, with 12 mm plywood for the sides, deck, and cabin. Bulkheads are also from plywood or Cortech composite panels, while stringers and other framing are Oregon. This method is quick, fair, and particularly economical.

There is standing headroom of more than 1900 mm in the hulls and on the bridgedeck. Accomodation is for up to eight in four double berths. In keeping with modern considerations, a generous cockpit awning provides shelter from sun and weather. Flexibility of design is an important feature, to accomodate different owner's requirements. There are two suggested cabin alternatives, one offering a more extended cabin and cockpit. Placement of galley and head facilities can be varied between bridgedeck and hulls, and cabins can be arranged to suit individual tastes.

The boat is powered by twin diesels of 15 - 25 HP which will give a speed of 8-9 knots. Larger engines may be installed. As befits a modern performance catamaran dagger boards are standard, while there is also the option of mini keels.

Plans provide detailed layouts and instructions, and include full sized cross sections for hull profiles. The boat is built directly onto the permanent bulkheads, which can be cut out by computer controlled router to eliminate a lot of tedious preparatory work in lofting, drafting and cutting.

A motor version has also been planned using the same layout with the addition of a flybridge and appropriate internal modifications to accomodate larger engines.

    • Overall length 12.00 m
    • Waterline length 11.50 m
    • Maximum beam 7.10 m
    • Waterline beam 6.78 m
    • Draught 0.395 m
    • Hull weight 2500 kg
    • Displacement 4700 kg
    • Midsection freeboard 1.540 m
    • Mass per unit immersion 21810 kg/m
    • Sail area 82.6 sq m
    • Bridgedeck clearance 750 mm
